A Partnership in Laughter; the Goal to Make a Difference
The Usual Suspects
, America’s most wanted improv comedy group has formed a partnership with The Performing Arts Center (PAC) at the Community College of Southern Nevada. Together they are offering Professional Quality Theatre at a community theatre price, as well as facilitating free workshops and mentorships involving area high school drama students. How will this work? Simple. The inaugural show, "Murder at the Howard Johnson’s" by Ron Clark and Sam Bobrick will open Friday, August 24 and run through Sunday, September 9. As the school calendar begins at the end of August, student training will not begin until mid-September. A student improv company will be formed under the direction of Jeff Granstrom
, The Usual Suspects Training Supervisor. "I’m really looking forward to working with the students. It’s important to give these kids a constructive outlet while reinforcing what they’re learning in school." Granstrom said. The Student Company will serve as opening act for
The Usual Suspects on October 19 and 26 at 8:00 PM in the Little Theatre on CCSN’s Cheyenne Campus. Their training will continue on a biweekly basis with additional performances throughout the year. The training doesn’t stop there. "We’re not training future stars, we’re training tomorrow’s business leaders and audience members." said Finley Bolton, Managing Director of The Usual Suspects/PAC Partnership. The purpose of these mentorships is to reinforce the importance of a good education, focus on the business of the arts, and, of course to offer the thrill of performing. Bolton said, "It is our responsibility to see that the tradition of live performance carries on into future generations. We like to think of this program as our way of fertilizing the future of the arts."Information will be sent to all area high schools mid-August outlining the performing and mentorship opportunities available. Twenty students who demonstrate enthusiasm, drive and commitment will be chosen to spend the year with
The Usual Suspects. "We’re really looking forward to meeting the studentsand getting started." Bolton said, "Since the program is free and open to all high school students, we hope to involve a unique melting-pot of students from across the Valley."
